I don’t hate the Wii, not at all. I just look down on it, with contempt, with pride and arrogance. And while I try to keep my opinion about it and the so called “casual boom” of late, I’ve just reached the point where I can no longer keep quiet. It’s too much already; too much watching as poor games sell tons more than good games, too much watching wave after wave of silly and really stupid games being developed, and too much reading things that are just plain wrong coming from a man like Miyamoto, for example, when he comes and says something like this or like this.
I try to be open-minded. There are different tastes and likes and dislikes for different people, so I try not to judge when others like what I consider inferior or of very poor quality. But you know what? I’m one of those silly idiots who still have hope that videogames can be recognized as a form of art as valid as, say, films, so in that respect I have every right to express my opinion and complain about bad games just like a film critic or a literary critic come and say this film or that book are utter crap. And I can no longer keep it to myself: I dislike what the wii is doing to the game industry. I’m not saying I hate Nintendo nor I blame Miyamoto for having completely lost it, no. I mean, they wanted to make money? There they are, making money, regardless of the disappointment to those who were once devoted to them. The problem is, as I read here, we outgrew Nintendo, and that’s why we don’t like what they’re doing now. By “we” I mean “we hardcore gamers who used to spend hours playing NES and SNES and who were excited to no end every time a new Mario was announced”. We simply grew up with their games, but as we grew up and developed more refined tastes, Nintendo stayed where they were: doing business and looking to make a profit. They’re not stupid: they’re swimming in money now. But all of us who were once Nintendo loyal supporters suddenly found ourselves before a game console that has less than half a dozen mildly good games and a bunch of rip off titles and a whole bunch of crap of epic proportions. Consequently, gamers felt cheated and abandoned by Nintendo. Only, they weren’t, or rather, Nintendo kept doing what it did so well: sell where the money was, no matter what.
I don’t want to ramble about this on and on (mainly because I know I could go on forever), but I still wanted to make a point, to state where I stand. It saddens me to see a really influent man like Miyamoto is having the attitude he's having now. I’m not fretting out that this trend will be the end of the games that really matter, because I know it won’t be, but I can’t help but roll my eyes up to the heavens every time I see things like this:
It’s okay: all the consoles of all time have had their share of crappy games, all of them, no exception. Why does it upset me, then? Does it bother me that non-gamers all over the world are now playing non-games? Does it bother me that people claim they’re playing videogames when they're aimlessly and purposelessly waggling a Wiimote? Does it annoy me that things like this or this even exist? Well, why not? Yes, it does. It bothers me in the same way it bothers me to see how a TV programme like Big Brother is so damn popular, or how gossip magazines sell by the tons. I cannot just dismiss those facts because people have different likes, can I? One thing is different taste, but another is not seeing beyond. And ranting like this won’t really do much, but alas, I really needed to take it out of my chest. So forgive me if I speak my mind in this matter. I think it’s better to say what I think, as little as it avails to.
If you want to speak your mind (whether to agree or disagree with me), please do so, by all means. And if you want to read some very interesting stuff in this topic, these are my personal (though biased) recommendations. I hope you find them as enjoyable as I did:
